QUESTION:

When does a superstitious cowboy throw his hat on the bed?

-- P.

ANSWER:

I suppose a superstitious cowboy would throw his hat on the bed when he wanted to flirt with disaster.

According to the Dictionary of Superstitions, by David Pickering, "Hats must never be laid down on BEDS or TABLES as this invites extreme bad luck, especially in sporting circles."

Some folks even think throwing a hat on the bed an invitation to death. Actually, there may be a valid reason to think that, 'cause if a cowboy throws his hat on the bed instead of hangin' it up, the lady of the house just might kill him! ;o)
